I must say, I have been a fan of Kaffe Fassett’s for over twenty years now. His newest book called Kaffe Fassett: Dreaming in Color: An Autobiography is certainly one of the reasons why I am such a fan.
In case you don’t know, Kaffe Fassett is one of knitting’s superstars. Kaffe’s use of color in the fashion and design industries is legendary. And, why not? Ideas that he puts forth, once seen, are so simple, yet so unimagined until seen through his eyes.
For many years now, Kaffe Fassett has been tempting us with his rich expertise in the worlds of knitting, quilting, embroidery and needlepoint. Just a quick look through any of his previous books, and you will understand why he is so popular. Wandering through his designs in any of his books, you will be drawn into Kaffe’s beautiful world of color. There is just no one out there quite like Kaffe.
Over the years Kaffe has given us books on every aspect of extraordinary knitting. His patterns are for young and old, beginner and expert. Every design has been so carefully created that you will feel as if Kaffe has designed it just for you. And well you should.
You see, what Kaffe has captured is the essence of knitting. In fact, when he began designing his patterns, there were so few to emulate; most were two colors or Fair Isle or Argyle. Kaffe opened up the knitting window to so much more. His patterns are taken from still life paintings, Oriental and South American designs, and tapestries; not to mention ideas he has created from all the places he has ever visited. With Kaffe there is nothing you can’t knit. He has transformed many every- day items into superb knitted patterns. Tiles, mosaics, costumes, Tudor houses, you name it, Kaffe has imagined it already.
This book, like all of Kaffe’s books is “knitting-candy” at its best! Colors that never seemed compatible with each other just blend together as if they were made for one another. When you combine these colors with patterns, any type of pattern at all, everyone you know will be bowled over by your talent and creativity.
In fact, years ago I did a needlepoint placemat from Glorious Needlepoint by Kaffe, and to this day, that placemat is one of my masterpieces. The beauty and textual design of it is absolutely stunning, and isn’t that what you’re looking for in your knitting pieces? I know I am.
In Dreaming in Color Kaffe Fassett: Dreaming in Color: An Autobiography Kaffe gives us a peek into where all his creativity has come from. From his growing-up years in the Big Sur area of California and all the influences that shaped his early life to his worldwide travels and his immersion into the world of fine arts, Kaffe literally set the world of knitting on fire with his explosive uses of color.
In this his autobiography, Kaffe takes us along for the ride. And what a glorious ride it is. I highly recommend Kaffe Fasset: Dreaming in Color.
